When Food & Wine interviewed Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, they asked her what one of her entertaining pet peeves was. She responded:
It’s important to give yourself, and your guests, enough space to eat, but too much space might, like Ina suggests, kill the party. It’s hard to have a conversation when the closest person is sitting 3 feet away from you and there are 8 other people trying to start conversations, too.
Instead of using one big table, consider using a couple of smaller tables. Or, if you only have a large table, think about how to space the place settings so that your guests can still talk to each other without having to shout. It’s tempting to fill the empty space on a large table with elaborate centerpieces, but if you take that route, make sure the height of the centerpieces is low enough that people sitting across from one another can still hold a conversation without having to lean over or stand up.
