RAWWR! Look out… Here comes Dinosaur Day
Ask any kid who is the most lovable dinosaur character in the history of cartoons, and you will hear the name “Rex.” Yes, the tall, anxiety-ridden and klutzy Tyrannosaurus from the Toy Story franchise. Rex is a kind, loving, and gentle dinosaur who always came to Woody’s rescue.
When it comes to kids’ bedroom décor, most people go with the Cars, Looney Toons, Yogi Bear, or SpongeBob Square Pants theme. If you want to surprise your kid with a new cartoon theme for their bedroom, then we suggest the good ol’ Rex. Plus, Dinosaur Day is around the corner, and this gives you the perfect opportunity to get a variety of décor items online and from stores.
About Dinosaur Day
Dinosaur Day commenced in 1987 in Texas at the Dinosaur Valley State Park. Back then, it was just a small event, which celebrated the extinction of the greatest animals that lived on the planet. Today, the event has evolved is now celebrated through elaborate museum openings and shows. The original date of the event is 1st June, but it is actually celebrated on 5th May.
The first dinosaur dates back to 245 million years, which was known as the start of the Middle Triassic Epoch. Their existence continued for the 180 million years and the Cretaceous Period marked their end. The Mesozoic Era, the time period of their existence, saw many changes. From bipedal dinosaurs to quadrupedal, others switching back and forth, a few with feathers and a few having natural body armor, the slow and the fast ones, the carnivores and the herbivores, and the lists go on. The earliest record of dinosaur fossils being found was in 1820. The term “dinosaur” was coined by an English Anatomist Richard Owen. There were more than 1,000 unique species of dinosaurs.
Alright, that’s enough with the history lesson. Let’s get down to the good part: the décor ideas. Following are a few dinosaur themed kids’ bedroom décor ideas that are quite easy to execute:
This is an easy décor idea. All you need are a couple of dinosaur figurines: the skeletal ones as well as the toy replicas. Paint the room white and furnish it with simple white furniture from cabinets to shelves, the study table, the bed set, and the wardrobe. You can either buy dinosaur footprint stencils from Amazon or you can draw them yourself on the wall.
Create a zigzag path from one wall to another and place the dinosaur toys at the end of each path to form a connection. This décor is pretty simple and creates a classic look. Place a few knick knacks such as faux plant pots on the shelves and in the cabinet. Instead of going with carpet, get floor boards installed and place white mats on it.
There you go… a basic dinosaur décor theme that will make the room look spacious. This décor is also great for older kids who want their room to be uniquely decorated, but simple at the same time.
The Magnetic Dino Wallpaper
Want to spend some quality time with your kid? Well, this dinosaur décor will offer your kid some interactive fun time and give the room a really cool look. Introduced by Sian Zeng, this magnetic dino wallpaper is one-of-a-kind and the only thing you need for the décor.
The wallpaper turns the room into a magnetic art board that will allow your kid to create stories and have fun with friends. There’s endless room for imagination. The wallpaper comes with 3 complimentary dinosaur magnets, which we know are not enough. So while you are out there shopping for bedroom furniture, grab a couple of magnets and a bucket to keep them in.
Since the wallpaper is so elaborate, it’s better to keep the furniture simple. One thing you can do to compliment the wallpaper is buy dinosaur-shaped stuff toys and pillows. This will create a theme and add some character to the décor.
Dinosaurs Coming to Life
The dramatic look that 3D décor gives beats the simplicity of wallpaper. We have always talked about painting the walls or stenciling them but there’s one more option that we are pretty sure you never even thought about: 3D bedroom décor.
Apart from the faux plants, the stuffed dinosaur toys and the dinosaur figurines, which are commonly used for creating the theme, we say, go big! Wall-sized art beats everything and trust us when we say, your kid will be awed. There are two ways you can create a 3D theme: you can either go with a 3D wall mural or you can get those plastic figurines as shown in the picture. Carpet the room and place a simple round mat in the center. The room doesn’t need to have much because the other things will overshadow the 3D décor and make the room look crowded.
Does your kid like to read? Sometimes, they just need a little motivation. Don’t you think that a reading spot might nudge them in the right direction? Well, this dino cave reading corner is the perfect spot that will encourage your kid to do his homework.
Creating this will take some time and effort. First, get a lattice backdrop and cover it with faux weed and leaves. Get a couple of wicker baskets and place faux plants in them. For creating the arch, the best way to get the right size and structure is to head over to your local furniture store and get a seat built. Wound a snake around the arch as shown in the picture and place a few dinosaur toys at the seats opening. Place a large cushion on the seat and cover it with a ragged style cloth. Place a few pillows or a stuffed dinosaur on the seat and the dino cave is complete. Instead of placing a bookshelf in the room, you can attach a storage box on either sides of the seat and place the books in them.
DIY Dinosaur Décor
Let’s talk about a little DIY. If you want to make small changes in the room, then we have a couple DIY décor ideas for you. First, collect all the dinosaur toys you have in your house. Better pick out the ones that your kid seldom plays with.
First up is the dinosaur hanging hook plate. All you need is a rectangular, thin wood plank, a couple of nails, glue and dinosaur toys. Cut the dinosaur toys in half and then glue them on the wood plank. Now hammer this piece of wood with a nail into the wall. There you go… a wood plate with dinosaur head as hooks.
Next up is the dinosaur book ends. This item is also pretty easy to make. You will need 4 small wood pieces and dinosaur toy. Join two pieces of wood in L shape, cut the dinosaur in half and glue both ends to the wood pieces. Make sure the wood pieces are thick and heavy to hold the book load or they will split apart from the weight. You can embellish the ends by glue grass, flowers and rocks on the wood piece that forms the base.
Last we have is the dinosaur cardboard cutout lamp. You can either buy a dinosaur cutout online or you can make one yourself. Once you have the card board in your hand, create small circles along the outer edge. Insert tiny bulbs from the back and you have a dinosaur lamp. When the room lights will be off, the tiny light bulbs will cast a huge shadow and create an amazing silhouette.
Dinosaur Bed Frame
This DIY décor is pretty easy to make. It’s time to test your painting skills for your kids. Draw a large dinosaur face on a white cardboard sheet. Do the works: paint, highlights, the teeth and all. Attach this cardboard on the front of the bed frame and voilà… a dinosaur themed bed.
Dinosaur Drawer Handles
Here’s another DIY, where all you have to do is make black silhouettes of dinosaurs from a thick cardboard sheet and then stick them on the drawers. The trick is to create a small cut at the bottom of the cutout and then insert it through the drawer handles. This way the cutout will be in the back and you can easily grab the handle to open the drawer.
If you don’t want the hassle of making the cutouts then we suggest using the same trick we suggested for creating the dinosaur hanging hooks. Unscrew the handles on the drawer and glue the half-cut dinosaurs in their place.
Dino Wall Décor
If you are looking for simple wall art, then we have a couple of ideas for you. You can create a dinosaur garland and hang it on the wall where the study table is placed. Get dinosaur stationery from pencils to rubber, sharpener, coloring books, art pad, scale, pencil box and more. The purpose is to create a corner where everything matches.
Another idea is to install a couple of shelves on the wall and place your kid’s entire dinosaur toys collection on it. You place them according to species, color or sizes. To create a wild look, draw some 3D jungle art surrounding the shelves, so that it looks like that the dinosaurs are standing in a cave.
The one wall art that you can never go wrong is picture frames. You can either your frame your kid’s dinosaur drawings or get colorful print outs and frame these. Again, you can dino-dazzle these frames by gluing dinosaur toys on the frame.
The Paleontology Décor
The branch of paleontology is pretty amazing and if your kid is older, then he will love this dino theme. For this décor, you need to go with stale colors to give the room an aged look. There are the photo frames of dinosaur fossil with their names on them, the old-style teepee tent with numbers on it and a cushion for seat, and finally the dinosaur curtains. To add some character to the décor, place a few wicker baskets in the room that can serve as holders for books and toys.
We call this Jurassic Park theme because it certainly ash that kind of vibe to it. Oh… don’t forget to hang the harts.
For the big kids, here’s what we think you should do: get a wall mural. We are talking about Hollywood-centric wallpaper that tells you a story. The scene will cover the entire wall and create a sophisticated look. If you think about it, this is something that adults will love too.
